An Observation on the Resistance of Cockroache to Various Insecticides

Abstract
Resistance of the German cockroaches to insecticides has been reported in many parts of the world and this has become a serious problem in the field of vector control. As no reference to the present status of insecticide-resistance of Korean common species (Blattella germanica L.), the author investigated various aspects of insect-tolerance to insecticides, which are now in common use. The roaches were collected from Seoul, reared for 2-3 generations in the laboratory. Both sexes of the roaches were tested against insecticides by topical application and residue tests. Insecticides used were DDT, ¥ã-BHC, dieldrin, malathion, sumithion, diazinon, cyanox and DDVP. The findings are summarized in the following :
1. The LD_(50) doses of female roaches by topical application were: DDT 20.30¥ìg, ¥ã-BHC 0.270¥ìg, dieldrin 0.360¥ìg, malathion 12.00¥ìg, sumithion 0.524¥ìg, diazinon 0.438¥ìg, cyanox 0.378¥ìg and DDVP 0.498¥ìg. The female roaches were about 1.5 times stronger than the male.
2. DDT showed the strongest residual effects among all of toxicants tested and diazinon showed the weakest effects. The other toxicants such as ¥ã-BHC, dieldrin, malathion, sumithion, DDVP and cyanox showed the moderate effects.
3. The average mortality of the roaches by contact test to the sprayed surfaces of different kitchen construction materials showed that tile surface resulted in better kill effects and followed by clay and plywood. The cement surface to which toxicants had been sprayed exhibited the poorest kill effects.
4. The roaches contacted with toxicants of organic phosphorous compounds such as sumithion, diazinon, cyanox and DDVP showed 100% kill effects after 30 minutes, while those contacted with DDT, ¥ã-BHC and dieldrin of organic chloro-compounds showed the same effect after 24 hours. On the contrary, in case of cement surface, the roaches died less than 30% after 30 minutes and 90% or less even after 24 hours.
